EMANZ is a professional body whose members have a common interest in improving energy use.  EMANZ members are the principle providers of energy efficiency services to all sectors of the economy.

The association's stated aims are:

  • To promote the highest standards of energy management skills and competence to foster and facilitate the integration of sound energy management practices into all sectors of the New Zealand economy.
  • To provide a forum for the discussion of energy management issues, skills and techniques to develop practical energy management policy proposals and represent these where appropriate.

EMANZ is uniquely positioned to highlight opportunities for improved energy productivity and reduced waste of energy. EMANZ provides support to its members to ensure the services provided in tackling these opportunities is carried out to the highest standards.

EMANZ is an incorporated society and is a “collaborating technical society of IPENZ (Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand).

History of EMANZ

Established in 1993, EMANZ initial meeting was pulled together by a group of like minded individuals from commercial, and public sector backgrounds with interests in energy efficiency, energy management and sustainable energy principles and practice. Over its history, EMANZ has developed a range of tools for managing and measuring energy. Since 2001, EMANZ has administered its own energy auditor accreditation scheme to ensure the highest standards are maintained when energy audits are carried out by those who have been granted accredited energy auditor status.

Functions of EMANZ

The main functions of EMANZ are to:

  • administer accreditation programmes (EMANZ currently has four different areas of Accreditation)
  • arrange events, like workshops conferences and forums to bring its members together to learn and develop new approaches and technologies,
  • represent its members to Government and other stakeholders
  • facilitate energy issue specific Focus Groups, for example, energy auditing, energy management and technologies
  • facilitate training courses and professional development for the benefit of its members and other interested parties
  • provide a focal point for energy management services and products

Members – Who make up the EMANZ Membership?

EMANZ Members are involved in a wide range of commercial, industrial and residential energy activities.  Members have expertise in energy auditing, in energy management and energy consultancy on a broad range of topics. EMANZ has members who are energy technology experts with specific expertise in lighting, HVAC and a range of other energy use technologies.  Many members are consultants providing advice on a range of issues from energy market issues to energy generation technologies.  EMANZ members are also building, asset and property managers managing energy use in private and public sector buildings and other plant and equipment.

EMANZ Executive Committee

EMANZ is lead by a Chairperson and an Executive Committee.  The implementation of the EMANZ Business Plan activities and the day to day running of the Association is the responsibility of the Executive Officer.

In April 2009 EMANZ employed a full time Executive Officer for the first time in its history.  The Executive Officer is Ewan Gebbie.  Ewan has strong history in the New Zealand energy sector.  He co-authored a report to Parliament in 1999 that contributed to the legislation that established EECA as a Crown Entity and the requirement for a National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy.  Since then he has worked in energy policy and most recently was Group Manager Regulatory Performance at Vector - a multi services utility.

EMANZ works in partnership with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).
