Transpower owns and operates the National Grid – the high voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand. We need to continually operate, maintain and develop New Zealand’s transmission network to ensure we meet the ongoing electricity needs of New Zealanders. We are presently implementing a programme to see how consumers interact and participate in Demand Response. Demand Response allows electricity consumers to reduce their net electricity demand for a period of time and get paid for this. Demand Response and the associated technology can allow us to better manage substantial increases in electricity demand, e.g. during a heat wave or cold snap. Maximising the existing grid in this manner may allow us to defer costly new lines and equipment and therefore reduce costs to all consumers. |
