  • The Electricity Commission, a Crown entity set up under the Electricity Act to oversee New Zealand's electricity industry and markets, also invests several millions of dollars a year on a range of “efficiency programmes”
  • Last year a review identified areas of “market failure” i.e. areas where saving electricity was highly cost effective.
  • This report outlines the electricity savings potential in New Zealand Commercial buildings;  approximately one third is for lighting, one third for heat and cooling and one third to power equipment.

Commercial Building Disclosure (CBD) is a national programme designed to improve the energy efficiency of Australia’s large office buildings

NABERS - National Australian Built Environment Rating System. Measures an existing building's environmental performance during operation, rates a building on the basis of its measured operational impacts in categories – Energy and greenhouse emissions, water, waste and indoor environment.

Computers, servers and data centres are the fastest growing area of energy use in all developed countries.

Green Star -  Ratings establish how the premises will perform under ideal circumstances based on design information and management processes. Also in New Zealand

Green Lease  - Encourage sustainable practices by both the landlord and the tenant and  removes disincentives to energy and water efficiency, recycling etc

IPMVP - The International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol provides a framework for ‘measuring’ energy or water savings.

Bench-marking of energy efficiency eg. Property Council; Office Building Energy Consumption Handbook

Case studies examples of identifying on-going energy savings from large and smaller commercial buildings which are already efficient.
