Lighting is an area where many EMANZ members will have some understanding but it is often a good idea to engage lighting specialists in your projects. There are, however, some good sources of information both in New Zealand and overseas. Some of these are detailed below.

Rightlight

RightLight is an industry-wide initiative. RightLight was originally developed by the Electricity Commission with support by the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA), Consumer New Zealand, New Zealand Green Building Council, Lighting Council NZ (LCNZ) and the Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand (ECANZ). Following the disestablishment of the Electricity Commission (October 2010), EECA now manages and maintains RightLight so consumers can interact with the tools available and evaluate the cost and potential electricity savings of energy efficient lighting in their homes and businesses.

Resources are available for residential, commercial and street lighting.

The business site includes an online assessment tool that will give a good idea on how lighting rates for energy efficiency and where improvements could be made. Simply enter basic details like…

  • Types of space – Industrial, Educational or office
  • The current lamp type and wattage in use
  • An estimate of lighting hours each day
  • Electricity cost
