Software to measure and manage energy PDF Print E-mail

Busy energy managers, many of whom are given the task as only part of their job, rarely have the time to painstakingly enter data into spreadsheets.

Several proprietary software packages are available in New Zealand. All are designed for organisations with substantial energy use, ranging from city councils to factories, wineries, shopping malls and universities.

They work best with modern time-of use electricity meters, but some can accommodate older-style meters.

There are a number of computer based packages available which can automate the M&T process and allow on-going critical analysis of energy use. Some of these have components addressing other energy management factors and some carry out more powerful analysis including billing verification. Some programs have been developed in New Zealand while others from overseas have local representatives. Most companies and individuals involved with these packages are EMANZ members. Not all packages available are listed below and if you know of other suitable programs please let EMANZ know and details can be added to this web page.

The listing of commercial software packages and services on this website cannot be taken as an endorsement of the product by EMANZ or EECA however the suppliers are able to provide references and user sites should you wish to obtain third party feedback. The information below has been sourced from supplier’s websites, literature or repeated from a survey of software conducted on behalf of EECA.

EECA has recently commissioned a review of software packages which gives additional information on the products listed above.

e-Bench™

This is marketed as an energy efficiency benchmarking database. e-Bench™ is an Internet based computer tool for measuring energy and environmental efficiency. Energy and CO2 is measured per facility or process and compared to benchmarks established from other facilities or processes around the country. In addition to benchmarking e-Bench™ can provide invoice reconciliation, targeting and monitoring, and also simulation.

e-Bench models an organisation’s core business (buildings and processes) and allows users to determine for themselves how efficiently they are consuming energy and utilities and how this relates to their core activities. e-Bench has been developed from concept by Energy and Technical Services Ltd based in Wellington.

e-Smart

e-Smart is an innovative, web-based resource developed by Smart Power which enables their clients to monitor changes in energy (electricity and gas) consumption and cost. e-Smart records the changes in energy consumption and cost while also providing benchmarks for individual sites and CO2 information year on year for comparison purposes. Other utilities or resources such as Oil, Petrol, Diesel, Water, Wastewater, Recycling, Coal, Taxi, Flights (Domestic, Short haul and Long haul), Landfill waste may be reported on within e-Smart. Additionally, Smart Power can report on the CO2-e emissions associated with the relevant utilities/resources.

Reporting includes cost and consumption information for the current financial year and the previous two financial years.  The client utilities budgets for the current financial year can be loaded allowing consumption and cost reporting against budget at all of the levels identified above.

Individual site trends are provided on a moving annual total basis using the energy use index, kWh/m²/p.a. and targets (benchmarks) for sites can also be inserted to gauge current site performance.   Other forms or measurement may be used if required.

A further report is available which allows the client to graph the trend information for several sites on one graph. This allows a manager to review the utility performance of each site against one another.  All these reports are available by individual utility or a combination e.g. electricity and gas.

A dashboard providing a snap shot at the end of each month is also provided allowing consumption and cost performance in that month, the year to date and a forecast to year end for consumption and cost for each utility.

A variety of personnel will benefit from accessing the information on e-Smart.

Property and facilities managers can easily check on individual sites or a group of sites performance with regard to consumption or cost. They can see how they perform against set benchmarks and select sites for further investigation.

Finance managers will benefit from the at a glance financial dashboard and if this option is selected track how sites are going against set budgets.

Sustainability managers can track all their targeted variables in one place.

All personnel can produce graphs and dashboards at the touch of a button for inclusion in organisational reports.

e-Smart has been developed by, and is available from Power Smart with offices in Wellington, Auckland and Melbourne.
