This page provides general details on the EMANZ Energy Management Programme and on Energy Management more generally.
The EMANZ Energy Management Programme provides a series of information and advice to Members and the general public on energy management. The Programme has a dedicated Focus Group - a group of sector experts; and is currently exploring the potential for a dedicated Energy Management Accreditation or Registration Programme.
What is Energy Management?
The term energy management means many things to many people. One definition of Energy Management is:
"The judicious and effective use of energy to maximize profits (minimize costs) and enhance competitive positions"
Another comprehensive definition is:
"The strategy of adjusting and optimizing energy, using systems and procedures so as to reduce energy requirements per unit of output while holding constant or reducing total costs of producing the output from these systems"
At EMANZ we believe Energy Management encompasses a wide range of activities and expertise in the use of energy. This includes the areas of measurement and control, the expert implementation of techniques, technology and tools to improve the efficiency, productivity and sustainable use of energy in New Zealand.

Energy Management Standards (coming soon)
Future ISO 50001 on energy management progresses to Draft International Standard
The future ISO 50001 standard for energy management was recently approved as a Draft International Standard (DIS). ISO 50001 will establish a framework for industrial plants, commercial facilities or entire organizations to manage energy. Targetting broad applicability across national economic sectors, it is estimated that the standard could influence up to 60% of the world’s energy use. More details are on the ISO website.
Energy Management Systems
Due for formal release at the end of 2009, the text of EN 16001 Energy Management Systems has been agreed by the members of the ISO drafting committee and is now being translated. It follows the same format as ISO EN 9001 Quality Systems and ISO EN 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
